Der amtierende Präsident der ALA, Michael Gorman, der als Motto für seine Amtszeit das Thema Ausbildung gewählt hatte, bietet zwei Events dazu an. Einmal eine Session auf dem nächsten ALA Meeting und dann eine Telekonferenz:
Mr. Gorman is also hosting a free national satellite teleconference to be held on Friday, June 9, 2006 from 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. CDT. „Confronting the Crisis in Library Education: A National Teleconference“ will feature speakers who will address the question of whether today’s library education programs are doing an adequate job of training the next generation of librarians and talk about the related issues of continuing education and certification. This live interactive program will provide opportunities for viewers nationwide to offer comments and ask questions via fax, email and telephone.
The teleconference will be available without charge to all libraries to downlink or view on webcast nationally and internationally. These programs continue the dialog on library education that began at the Forum on Education for Librarianship that Mr. Gorman sponsored at ALA 2006 Midwinter Meeting in San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Gorman war schon in Potsdam auf der EUCLID/ALISE conference 2003 durch seine provokanten Thesen aufgefallen. Er hält die amerikanische Master-Ausbildung für zu praxisfern – und spricht von einer Krise. Als ich ihm in Potsdam zuhörte traute ich meinen Ohren nicht, ich dachte fast einen deutschen Bibliothekar zu hören. Aber meinen amerikanischen Kollegen erging es genauso und Gorman musste sich eine heftige Diskussion gefallen lassen. Ob seine aktuelle Initiative anders geartet ist kann ich aus der Ferne nicht gut beurteilen. Es ist aber doch bemerkenswert, dass nach der KALIPER-Initiative vor wenigern Jahren erneut die amerikanischen Bibliothekare sich um ihre Ausbildung kümmern. Wann war das das letzte Mal der Fall in Deutschland?
