Die Bill&Melinda Gates foundation, die schon die Cable Book Library und die Information Gas Station in Helsinki angeschoben hatte, investiert erneut massiv in Bibliotheken. OCLC erhält 5 Millionen USD für eine “Awareness Campagne” zur Unterstützung von öffentlichen Bibliotheken.

Aufgrund der oft sehr bürgernahen Finanzierung (über Bürgerhaushalte) von Bibliotheken in den USA ergibt sich hier aktuell ein besonderes Problem. Dennoch würde eine vergleichbare Kampagne auch Deutschland gut tun. Oder?

Wie versprochen mehr von der CBPQ-Konferenz in Québec. Wohl das Spannendste war ein Vortrag eines OCLC Vertreters, Daniel Boivin, der erste Ergebnisse aus der neuen OCLC Studie vortrug. “Frisch ins Französische übersetzt”. Leider ist sein Vortrag (noch?) nicht in den “actes du congrès” enthalten. Ich habe seine Folien photographiert, aber damit bleiben sie auf Französisch. Vielleicht ein paar Highlights in einer Weiterübersetzung….

Wesentliches Thema der neuen Studie ist die Frage, ob Social Networking nur ein vorrübergehendes Phänomen ist und ob Bibliotheken sich diesem widmen sollten und wenn ja wie. Begleitende Frage ist, wieviel Vertrauen die Nutzer bzw. die Bibliothekare den neuen Funktionen des Webs entgegenbringen. Dazu gibt es auf der Startseite des Reports auch schon 5 spannende kleine Filme mit Aussagen der Interviewten in der Studie (leider wieder nur mit IE anschaubar.).

Wichtig ist aber vor allem auch, dass die Erhebung diesmal wieder wirklich global war: in den Ländern Frankreich, Großbritannien, Deutschland, Niederlande, Japan, Kanada, USA wurden jeweils relativ große Repräsentativbefragungen durchgeführt (N= 800 bis 1800 jeweils). So sind also in erster Linie die internationalen Vergleiche interessant. Z.B. die Frage: “Haben Sie in den letzten 12 Monaten eine Bibliothek besucht (vor Ort oder online)?”
Darauf antworten weltweit insgesamt 27% mit “nein – aber früher“, in den USA 28%, in Kanada 31%, in Großbritannien 35%, in Frankreich 23%, in Japan 18% und in Deutschland 35%. Überhaupt nie in eine Bibliothek gekommen sind insgesamt 17%, in den USA 7%, in Kanada 10%, in Großbritannien 11% in Frankreich 29%, in Japan 40% und in Deutschland 22%. In beiden Fällen schneidet Deutschland also schlecht ab. Vor allem scheint gerade im letzten Jahr ein besonderer Rückgang an Bibliotheksbesuchern zu verzeichnen zu sein.

Auch die Frage nach der “Library Card” ist recht deutlich. in Frankreich und Deutschland gibt es die wenigsten “oui” (grün) in allen Altersgruppen.

Das Hauptziel der Studie war die Frage, wieviel Vertrauen die Nutzer dem Web und seinen Diensten geben, wem sie überhaupt persönliche Informationen preisgeben würden. Hier überrascht der internationale Vergleich, hätte ich aus persönlichen Erfahrungen genau das Gegenteil erwartet: die Deutschen sind freigiebiger mit persönlichen Informationen als andere Länder. Allerdings handelt es sich bei dieser spezifischen Fragestellung um die Frage, welche Informationen aus dem Bibliothekskontext man mit wem teilen würde. Vielleicht glauben die Deutschen hier doch auch noch an den vertrauenswürdigen Bibliotheksbeamten… Im Schnitt würden 36% aller Befragten überhaupt keinem mitteilen wollen, was sie in der Bibliothek ausgeliehen haben. Deutsche würden dies nur zu 22% für sich behalten wollen. Hieran anknüpfend stellt sich die Frage nach der Nutzung von Recommending Diensten in Deutschland und anderswo. Angesichts dieser Zahlen verwundert, dass man in Deutschand davon weniger sieht als im Ausland.

Naturgemäß wird die Frage nach dem Vertrauen in Webdienste sehr detailliert abgefragt (so sehr, dass die Folien schwer les- und übersetzbar sind). Grundtenor ist allerdings stets, dass Bibliothekare weitaus vorsichtiger im Umgang mit Ihren persönlichen Daten und ängstlich im bezug auf die Nutzung von Web2.0-Angebote sind, die persönliche Daten verlangen. Die Zurückhaltung hat etwas mit dem Alter der Bibliothekare zu tun, aber auch mit der Erfahrung mit den Diensten selbst. Besonders wenig Erfahrung besteht im Bereich Chat und Instant Messaging, aber die passive Nutzung von Web2.0 Diensten durch Bibliothekare ist doch schon relativ weit verbreitet.

Wichtige Frage, die nach einer Flut von Zahlen und Folien im Raum stand: soll die Bibliothek eine aktive Rolle übernehmen beim Angebot von Sozialen Netzwerken oder nicht. Ca. 50% der Befragten (USA, Kanada, Bibliothekare) sind sich sicher, dass sie dies nicht sollte. Nur 10-15% würden dies befürworten. Der Referent von OCLC konnte noch so viel Enthusiasmus aufbringen, und noch so sehr an Kundenorientierung appellieren, auch die anwesenden Bibliothekare auf der Konferenz der frankokanadischen Bibliotheksvereinigung konnten ihm ebenfalls mehrheitlich nicht folgen – trotz der authentischen Berichte von Webnutzern, die hierin eine Bereicherung für ihr Leben sehen.

Und schließlich wurde die Frage gestellt, die auch schon die anderen OCLC Studien prägte: Was fällt Ihnen als erstes in Verbindung mit dem Wort Bibliothek ein? Books, just books.

Ich würde mit Daniel Boivin sagen, dass die Frage im Grunde falsch gestellt ist, bzw. dass es gilt, genau hier etwas zu ändern, wenn Bibliotheken relevant im Leben ihrer bisherigen Nutzer bleiben wollen. Oder wie es ein Unternehmensberater bei einem Berufungsvortrag an der FH Potsdam unlängst sagte: es gibt nur zwei Arten von Organisationen, die die überleben und die anderen.

Die vierte Ausgabe von NeXT Space kommt etwas “normaler” daher. Aber immer noch wichtig und interessant. Indiz lediglich, dass viele “hype”-Themen der letzten Monate zum Alltag geworden sind!

Ein Aufmacher ist “Mulitilingualität”. Interessant dazu die Rubrik “Die Welt in Zahlen” bei BrandEins 11/06: die USA geben 2007 zusätzlich 114 Mrd USD aus für das Erlernen von Fremdsprachen – im Nachklang zu 9/11! Die UNESCO gibt 2006/2007 4 Mio USD für das Programm “Dekade der Alphabetisierung aus.

Es ist zwar nicht der Bill&Melinda Gates Foundation Access to Learning award, den z.B. die Stadtbibliothek Helsinki als erste erhielt, aber dafür sind es doch 1,2 Mio $, die OCLC von der Stiftung erhält für weitere Trendforschungen.

The $1.2 million grant will be used by OCLC to conduct research, develop strategies, create materials and test elements of a national marketing campaign to demonstrate the value of libraries, and the need to increase support for libraries to meet the changing needs and expectations of library users.

Trends suggest that U.S. public libraries will find it difficult to adequately fund operations over the next 3 to 5 years—a period in which public libraries will come under increasing pressure to modernize programs, facilities and electronic infrastructure and offer more Internet-based services and electronic collections. At the same time, studies indicate that most people are unaware of all the types of information and services libraries make available to their patrons.

“Libraries must more effectively communicate their current services and value in this era of rising costs and increased competition,” said Cathy De Rosa, Vice President, OCLC Marketing and Library Services and principal contributor to Perceptions of Libraries and Information Resources, a report issued in December 2005 based on Harris Poll findings. “Many libraries lack the resources, expertise and funding to build the library advocacy and marketing programs required to create an environment that can sustain and increase support. It is our goal to help libraries communicate their value to the communities they serve.”

Ein weiterer Beleg für die Qualität der eingeschlagenen Wege bei OCLC, so skeptisch man auch Trend- und Zukunftsforschung gegenüber sein mag.

zum Tode des Gründers von OCLC, Frederick G. Kilgour. Die Feier zu Ehren von Kilgour gibt es als WebCast Event nächste Woche. Die Sonderausgabe (no. 3) von NeXT beschreibt ihn als den Pionier der amerikanischen Bibliotheksautomatisierung. Geb 1914 gründete er OCLC 1967 und begann den WorldCat 1971. Bis 2004 war er u.a. an der renommierten School of Information and Library Science, University of North Carolina, “Distinguished Research Professor”.
Auf die schon erwähnte, immer noch lesenswerte Ausgabe 2.0 von NeXT (zu Bibliotheken und Web2.0) hatte soeben Globolibro hingewiesen.

Der RLG Service, der aus den Katalogen der beteiligten Bibliotheken vernünftige Literaturlisten lieferte, wird am 1. November abgeschaltet. Man wird auf WorldCat verwiesen, mit dem man jetzt nach der Fusion verheiratet ist. Dort gibt es aber bisher nicht diesen komfortablen Service für Studenten aus den Treffern gleich eine Literaturliste zu machen. So haben eben Monopolisierungstendenzen selten etwas gutes – ich hatte schon falsche Hoffnungen.

Thanks for your interest in RedLightGreen. RedLightGreen was designed as a way to access the books portion of the RLG Union Catalog, and we never had plans to expand to material types beyond books. We do not have a good way for you to export the data into a bibliographic management tool, and in fact are now planning to shut the service down as of November 1st. We are encouraging RedLightGreen users to export their citation lists, and to start using WorldCat.org as an alternative.

Die Mail bezieht sich auch auf meine Frage, warum keine unselbstständige Literatur mit dem Service erreichbar sei. Literaturlisten – auch von Studenten – sollten eigentlich nicht nur Monographien beinhalten. Die Antwort der Bibliothekare erschreckt etwas. In allen drei Sätzen der kurzen Mail…

Pressemitteilung von RLG vom 8.9.2006

Wenn Frau Dr. Merkel sagt, wir müssten endlich die Militärausgaben erhöhen, sei erlaubt, erneut an die Analyse von OCLC zu erinnern: Worldwide Education and Library Spending, bei der Deutschland auch ziemlich schlecht aussieht. (Mit 0,07 % des Bruttosozialprodukts: das Schlusslicht in den Bibliotheksausgaben der analysierten europäischen Länder. Unglaublich, aber immer wieder und immer noch wahr in dem Land, das die “Bibliothekswissenschaft” erfunden hat.)

Frage an unsere Studenten (eine der zukünftigen Generationen, von der Frau Dr. Merkel spricht): was bringt eher eine nachhaltige gesellschaftliche Entwicklung? Schwerter oder Bildung? So im weltweiten Vergleich.

Ein neuer Podcast von einem der OCLC Symposien: OCLC Symposium: Preserving Library Core Value and Envisioning the Future. Leider nur in Audio – es fehlt wirklich der visuelle Teil, da hier wieder wie immer auch mit Abstimmungen und natürlich mit Präsentationsfolien gearbeitet wird. Inhaltlich aber wirklich sehr lehrreich zu Trendforschung, Kontingenz und Chaos – immer mit Blick auf die Zukunft der Bibliothek.

Die soeben erschienene 2. Ausgabe des OCLC Journals “NextSpace” widmet sich – wie sollte es anders sein für eine n° 2 – dem Thema Web 2.0.

The potential network effects of Web 2.0 have not gone unnoticed in the library community. A corresponding Library 2.0 discussion is underway, primarily in the blogosphere, about how libraries will fit into and thrive in the second coming of the Web. NextSpace asked a futurist, three librarians and an OCLC Vice President to comment on the library possibilities of Web 2.0.

N° 1 von NextSpace, erschienen vor einigen Wochen, behandelte ähnlich symbolisch die “Marke Bibliothek” unter dem Titel “Extreme Makeover”.

Gewöhnlich gut informierte Kreise berichten auch vom Vormarsch von OCLC/PICA (ehem Sisis) auf dem deutschen Markt. Der Worldcat wird demnächst Daten des GBV und nicht nur der BSB beinhalten. Auf dass Google Scholar uns nun auch endlich den Weg zu unseren Bibliotheken weist.

Lorcan Dempsey (OCLC) macht in seinem Blog aufmerksam auf eine Konferenz, die im März mit dem metaphorischen Namen “Taiga Forum” in Chicago stattfand:

We must move beyond the borders and transcend the traditional library organization. Taiga is the land between the tundra and deciduous forests and grasslands. Taiga is about change, a place of shifting boundaries.

Unter den Referenten dieser (invitation only) Tagung waren so illustre Personen wie Paul Duguid und Lorcan Dempsey. Die Präsentationen sind als pdf oder ppt online und spannend zu lesen. All statements are prefaced by “Within the next five years…”

1. traditional library organizational structures will no longer be functional. Reference and catalog librarians as we know them today will no longer exist. Technical services and public services will have merged into a new group called “consulting [something]“. Public services and instructional technology, wherever it exists, will have merged or will no longer exist.
2. libraries will have reduced the physical footprint of the physical collection within the library proper by at least 50 percent. Support services see similar reductions and these changes impact the national libraries as well (they are probably merged).
3. the majority of reference questions will be answered through Google Answer or something like it. There will no longer be reference desks or reference offices in the library. Instead, public services staff offices will be located outside the physical library. Metasearching will render reference librarians obsolete.
4. all information discovery will begin at Google, including discovery of library resources. The continuing disaggregation of content from its original container will cause a revolution in resource discovery.
5. a large number of libraries will no longer have local OPACs. Instead, we will have entered a new age of data consolidation (either shared catalogs or catalogs that are integrated into discovery tools), both of our catalogs and our collections. The ERM system and the ILS will be one and discovery will be outsourced.
6. there will no longer be a monolithic library Web site. Instead, library data will be pushed out to many starting places on the Web and directly to users.
7. academic computing and libraries will have merged. The library will be a partner is the Learning and Research Support Services Infrastructure. Its value will depend on its ability to reallocate resources to new curation, workflow, and resource specialization services.
8. there will be no more librarians as we know them. Staff may have MBAs or be computer/data scientists. All library staff will need the technical skills equivalent to today’s systems and web services personnel. The ever-increasing technology curve will precipitate a high turnover among traditional librarians; the average age of library staff will have dropped to 28.
9. publishers and intermediaries will have changed dramatically. Many small and scholarly publishers will fold. Subscription agents and book vendors will have new business models. Dissemination of non-STM serials and books will no longer be commercially viable.
10. e-books and e-book readers will be ubiquitous. Standards will have magically made this possible. Hand helds will be ubiquitous and library resources will need to be accessible to these devices to meet user needs.
11. simple aggregation of resources will not be enough. They have to be specialized for constituency use and projected into user environments (my.yahoo, e-portfolio, CMS, RSS aggregator). Workflow replaces database and website as the primary locus of attention. The library role is to project specialized services into research and learning workflows.
12. ‘Intermediate environments’ will be as important as consumers of library services as endusers. Intermediate consumers are environments in which users construct workflow and digital identity. RSS aggregators, course management systems, uPortal, my.yahoo, flickr, myspace, microsoft research pane, etc.
13. libraries will provide shared curation services for important portions of the cultural, scholarly, historic and institutional record. This will move from ad hoc, sub optimal project working to a collaborative strategy, a shared approach.
14. research support services will become routine. The institutional repository will be one set of services within the wider set of services that assist in the researcher and research administration workflow.
15. the library community recognizes the debilitating fragmentation of its collaborative structures and consolidates around fewer targeted initiatives and organizations. This is driven by the recognition that system-wide efficiencies need to drive local improvement.
